Am I a cheater?

technically it is cheating, because you must be calculating future positions in mind, rather than playing them out.

But compared to the computer assistance that we see so frequently in online chess, that is very mild, almost no cheating!
@goldilocks, #6, saw your comment after I posted mine....

so many words are similar, it seems like plagiarism; but trust we both independently wrote it :D
When you move the pieces around to calculate variations yes that is cheating. No one can stop you though.
In general, in real time chess, you are only allowed to see the current position, not future ones. In correspondence chess, you can move the pieces at will.

So, yes, you are cheating.
Interesting question indeed...

Lichess' TOS talks about heating as such: "[Cheating] comes in various forms. Cheating is anything that gives you an unfair advantage over a human player, and includes opening books, computer engines, and having a friend help you. You may use these for training, or against Stockfish. This is to keep the game fair. A game of chess is you vs. them, not Rybka at 3000 rating vs. them" (http://en.lichess.org/terms-of-service).

Strictly speaking, an extra board to plan out positions would possibly give you an unfair advantage over another player because you have an extra tool (the board).

So, I'd say that yes, it is cheating... though I really wouldn't care if my opponent played with a board.

He says "I use my board to play the moves I JUST PLAYED HERE on lichess.com". He is not talking about future moves. Come on!

Hmm... My bad. Yeap, I've just read it. By this point of view, it's cheating.
