Information about the player's country

I wonder if it would be possible to somehow "automatically" identify the country where a player is from. For example by IP address etc. After all, no one needs to be ashamed of where they live. It would also have the advantage that we could "knowing things" choose who to play with and who not to play with, because we are emotionally closer to some and further away from others.

Thanks Jarno S.
No, the Lichess cannot ask about players ip address, unless if the player wrote down where he lives, example: USA, Pensylvania, Street ----, Phone number: +8800555555 e.t.с.

I am very glad that this is not possible for data protection reasons. And we've seen often enough that there is hostility in the forum just because someone comes from a certain country. I would even leave out the input field in the profile completely.
It would be discriminatory. The is just 1 GM or IM in many countries, so one could not play anonymously then. And while a 2600-rated American, Indian or Russian player can remain anonymous, in many other countries their identity would be revealed.
By the way, the author of the topic has a Czech flag, but their name looks Finnish.

Your name doesn't look particularly Earthy. ;-)

Of course the days when virtually everyone had names which matched where they lived are long gone. I'm Dutch, but my first name is Irish, my last name an Anglicised version of a Norwegian name, and I was born in England.

Migration is the new normal.
I'm from the Czech Republic and that's OK. But I'm also a motorsport fan and Jarno Saarinen was a racer I admired a lot. So I borrowed his name as a nickname. In 1972, he became world champion in road motorcycle racing, in the 250cc category. He's the only Finn to win a Grand Prix title. And did you know that the most common Czech name is Josef Novák? :-)
And actually, I don't even hide the fact that I don't play with players from a certain country out of a higher moral principle.

These two are difficult to mix:

One more point: country derived from the IP adress may be misleading on many occasions. I once did some job for a company where their Czech office was using a tunneled connectivity via their central in Netherlands. So anyone playing from there would show as "from Netherlands". The same would be true for anyone using a public "VPN" service.

And even if the address does match the physical location, it may be completely misleading. My brother is now living and working in a different country and is going to for next few years. Should he show as being from that country? And should I show as "from Greece" while playing on a vacation? Or "from Canada" while on a conference?
