How strong you need to be to make money with chess?

@hatchet:
Isn't that what Youtube exactly is? There's a few gems in the sea of sand but if you look for them, you'll find nice content.

On top of just videos and books, new medium like opening repositories (such as, *cough*, ches☆able) and taking the time to study master games are good ways to learn as well. I think it really depends on the person themselves; if they don't have many good options for them then they can always hire a couch like the thread suggests.
I use a bunch of methods to study. Watch videos, play, tactics, and I do spend a lot of time in the QGD Exchange positional lines that I like so much (a couple of hours a week looking through and seeing GM games in this opening). Once I learn a bit more Ill move to a different opening to obsessively study. I have a feeling I know what it is but not sure. (Kan Sicilian) Been playing it a lot recently.
@arz920 : to make a living out of chess playing, you need to be at minimum strong GM (2550-2600). But even then, don't expect more than minimum wage.

There's not a lot of money in chess. It's an artistic endeavour.
#23 IMHO it seems like the money in chess is mostly from tournament prizes and merchandise; though platforms exist to connect teachers and students, it's challenging to make money from teaching the game.

I hope that one day that changes.
ChessExplained said once in a video that only the ≈30th best rated players worldwide can live by playing chess only.
tldr: if you are thinking of making a living from chess, you should at least greatly reconsider that idea. if it's just making a few extra bucks, coaching/teaching is most likely better than playing. but still don't get too excited about it.
I know a lot of top chess players are making a living playing poker instead. Hey, it's still playing a game for a living, and you can't really beat that.
Also, aren't all the chess hustlers in washington square technically making a living playing chess? I guess it depends on what you consider a living.
@hatchet

I'm rated significantly less than 2550-2600 and I make a living teaching chess. What you said is wildly incorrect. I even know people rated far less than me doing it.

Hmm, ok, so what brings in the most money?
Teaching? Streaming? I really can't imagine how that works.
And rated far less than you?
Say 1600-1700 FIDE you mean?
I don't wanna sound mean, but when your teacher is 1600, that's fine for school chess, but not if you wanna get better than the average club player.
